BTC crosses $80K. Kimchi premium returns after 100+ days. Upbit hits 4.61T KRW daily volume, up 192%.
Bitcoin crossed $80,000 during the week of August 25 — the first time since May. The move coincided with a return of the kimchi premium: BTC traded at a 1.8–2.4% premium on Korean exchanges, ending more than 100 consecutive days of reverse premium. Bloomberg covered the reversal on September 1: "Bitcoin 'Kimchi Premium' Is Back as South Korean Market Stirs." Upbit daily volume briefly hit 4.61 trillion KRW, up 192.4% on the week. Bithumb topped 2 trillion KRW in daily volume, up 116.1%.
Both figures came off a severely depressed base. H1 2026 financials published this week showed Dunamu (Upbit's operator) posting revenue of 408.1 billion KRW — down 49.1% year-on-year — with operating profit collapsing 79.7% to 111.5 billion KRW. Bithumb reported revenue of 168.8 billion KRW (down 48.7% YoY) and a net loss of 108.7 billion KRW ($77M). Both sets of results cover the period before the late-August recovery. Q3 results, due October–November, will show whether the final week of August extended into September or was a brief rally.
DABA targets September National Assembly reintroduction. Stablecoin issuer debate still unresolved. EURC dual-lists KRW on both major exchanges.
The Digital Asset Basic Act is targeting reintroduction to the National Assembly in September 2026. The FSC subcommittee is meeting fortnightly, with stablecoin regulation as the primary unresolved issue. The core debate has not moved: the Bank of Korea is pushing for bank-only issuance to protect financial stability; the FSC is advocating for broader fintech and technology firm access. The September government-ruling party bill submission is the next hard data point for which model Korea is moving toward — and the stablecoin provisions will define Korean market structure for the next several years.
EURC — Circle's euro-denominated stablecoin — dual-listed on Upbit (KRW, BTC, USDT) and Bithumb (KRW) on August 28, becoming the first major non-KRW, non-USDT stablecoin to gain simultaneous KRW-market access on both Korean exchanges. The listing landed during active DABA deliberation. Community channels focused not on EURC's token fundamentals but on its regulatory symbolism: Upbit and Bithumb listing a foreign-currency stablecoin before DABA rulemaking is finalized signals that the exchanges are comfortable moving ahead of formal classification. Whether regulators read the EURC listing as market demand data during deliberation is the question to watch as the September bill submission approaches.
Heaviest review week of 2026. SNX triple-delisted across Upbit, Bithumb, and Coinone. ICX dual-caution. INJ warning. Five tokens actioned in one week.
SNX (Synthetix) received simultaneous delisting notices from Upbit, Bithumb, and Coinone on August 28 — effective September 28 at 15:00 KST. A coordinated triple-delisting is rare; the last comparable multi-exchange exit was during the 2025 regulatory review cycle. ICX (ICON) was designated a trading caution item on both Upbit and Bithumb simultaneously on August 28, with deposit and withdrawal suspended on both platforms. ICX has been listed on Korean exchanges since 2017 — one of the longest-standing tokens in the Korean market — and its simultaneous dual-caution designation signals that legacy status does not confer protection in the current review cycle.
TT (ThunderCore) had its Upbit suspension accelerated from September 14 to September 1 at 09:00 KST, announced August 27. MANTRA (OM) had Bithumb withdrawal services suspended August 31, following its trading warning designation on August 21. INJ (Injective) was placed under Upbit trading warning with deposit and withdrawal suspended on September 1. Five distinct tokens actioned across both major exchanges in one week — the exit gate and the listing gate are both running at full capacity simultaneously.
