BTC clears $85K for the first time since January, up ~8% on the week and 30%+ from August trough. Upbit volume hits $1.84B — highest since mid-March.
Bitcoin cleared $85,000 this week for the first time since January, closing around $86,354 on September 21 — up roughly 8% on the week and over 30% from its August 19 trough. Korean exchange volumes moved sharply with it: Upbit recorded approximately $1.84B in 24-hour spot volume, its highest since mid-March and nearly three times the prior week's reading. Bithumb recorded approximately $935M, up over 130% week-on-week.
The kimchi premium recovered from 0.98% to approximately 1.55–1.78% on Upbit and 1.80% on Bithumb — a sign that domestic retail buying is re-engaging with global price momentum rather than standing aside.
JPYC lists Upbit — first yen stablecoin in Korea. Briefly trades at 4x peg. Issuer mints ¥1.69B on listing day. Korea now 54% of global JPYC volume.
JPYC (JPY Coin), Japan's yen-pegged stablecoin, listed on Upbit in KRW, BTC, and USDT markets on September 17 at 18:00 KST — after two delays from the original 12:00 KST slot. It is the first yen-denominated stablecoin listed on a Korean exchange. Korean buying pressure overwhelmed available float immediately: the token briefly traded at 37.60 KRW (approximately ¥4.1) against a theoretical peg of around 8.86 KRW (¥1). JPYC's issuer minted ¥1.69B on listing day alone; total supply climbed above ¥4.2B within 48 hours as arbitrage flows normalised the price.
By September 21, Korea accounted for 54.18% of total global JPYC spot volume — one in every two JPYC tokens traded worldwide changed hands on Korean exchanges. Fintech integrations followed quickly: 2% yield programs and clinic discount schemes using JPYC began appearing in Korea within days of the listing. The episode adds live market data to the DABA stablecoin debate: Korean retail absorbed over half of global yen stablecoin volume within five days, illustrating appetite for non-USD stablecoins well ahead of domestic won-stablecoin legislation.
AVA surges 100% on Bithumb listing. KRW pair generates ~$40M — more than Binance's global AVA pair. Total 24-hour volume: $136.47M, over 6x market cap.
Bithumb listed AVA (Travala, a Binance-backed travel rewards token) on September 17 at 14:00 KST with a reference price of 214 KRW. AVA surged approximately 100% in 24 hours, with Bithumb's KRW pair generating roughly $40M in volume — exceeding Binance's global AVA pair on listing day. Across all markets, AVA's 24-hour volume reached approximately $136.47M, more than six times its market cap at listing. The AVA result is a concrete data point for what a Bithumb KRW listing can generate for a mid-cap token in the current $85K BTC environment.
DABA hits its most critical window. September government bill targets hold. JPYC listing adds live demand data to the stablecoin issuance debate.
The Digital Asset Basic Act is in its most critical legislative window. The ruling Democratic Party and FSC had agreed to target a September government-ruling party bill submission, with November as the target for the National Assembly review subcommittee. The stablecoin issuance dispute remains unresolved: whether only bank-led consortia or any qualifying entity can issue won-stablecoins is central to the bill's final shape. The JPYC listing this week added live market evidence to the debate — Korea absorbing 54% of global yen stablecoin volume within days of its first Korean listing illustrates retail demand for non-USD stablecoins well ahead of legislative clarity. That data is likely to be cited on both sides of the issuance eligibility argument as the won-stablecoin chapter is finalised.
KBW 2026 opens in one week. September 29 Institutional Summit invite-only. Speakers: Tom Lee, Arthur Hayes, Joseph Lubin, Monica Long, Jeff Yan.
Korea Blockchain Week 2026 runs September 29 – October 1 at Walkerhill Hotels and Resorts, Seoul. The September 29 invite-only Institutional Summit, co-hosted by Upbit and FactBlock, opens the conference for policymakers, financial institutions, and senior industry leaders. Confirmed speakers include Tom Lee (Bitmine), Arthur Hayes (Maelstrom), Joseph Lubin (Consensys/Ethereum co-founder), Bo Hines (Tether USA), Brian Quintenz (former CFTC), Monica Long (Ripple), and Jeff Yan (Hyperliquid Labs). Four Pillars Research participates in EastPoint: Seoul 2026 on September 28 as research partner. SAND (The Sandbox) remains under Upbit investment warning; Bithumb's formal caution review window runs September 28 – October 4 — a delisting decision during KBW week would add notable market noise to the conference.
