Five of Korea's most significant financial institutions moved from observing crypto to transacting in 30 days. Meanwhile Upbit posted the largest single-token Day 1 volume figure of the cycle, KOSPI's drawdown is approaching levels seen only at the IMF crisis, 2008, and COVID — and the stablecoin landscape is becoming active from multiple directions simultaneously.
Institutional

Five Korean TradFi players move into crypto in 30 days. Mirae Asset, Korea Investment Securities, Kakao, and Toss join Hana.

Mirae Asset and Korea Investment Securities are acquiring stakes in Korean crypto exchanges. Kakao and Toss are pursuing Circle partnerships for stablecoin, payment, and remittance infrastructure. This is the second consecutive week of multi-party Korean TradFi convergence on crypto. Last week brought Hana Financial's $670M equity stake in Dunamu with a named tokenization product roadmap. This week adds four additional institutions.

Mirae Asset is Korea's largest asset manager by AUM. Kakao and Toss pursuing Circle stablecoin infrastructure marks a fintech entry vector distinct from the bank/exchange equity model. In 30 days, five of Korea's most significant financial institutions have moved from observing crypto to transacting. The FSC tokenized securities framework activates February 4, 2027. The institutional pre-positioning window is now visibly open and competitive.

The window between now and February 4, 2027 is the pre-positioning window. It is not staying open indefinitely.
RWA

Global RWA market $31.93B, +164% YoY. Injective + POSCO + LG CNS trade finance blockchain live in Korea.

The global RWA market reached $31.93 billion as of June 30, up 164% year-over-year. US Treasuries represent 46.4% of supply. H1 2026 alone grew 46%. Tiger Research flagged three structural developments this week: Circle acquired approximately 1,000 IBM blockchain patents, strengthening its institutional settlement infrastructure; Securitize received SEC Registered Investment Adviser status; and Ondo Network launched.

Separately, Injective, POSCO International, and LG CNS deployed a live trade finance blockchain for Korean enterprise trade documentation on July 28 — an active Korean enterprise RWA implementation rather than a pilot. Korea now offers a compliance pathway (FSC framework, February 2027), a named TradFi distribution partner (Hana Financial via Upbit), and live institutional implementations.

Exchange Listings

Upbit lists MORPHO and EUL within 24 hours. EUL hits $226M+ Day 1. MORPHO captures 12% of global daily volume.

Upbit listed Morpho (MORPHO) and Euler Finance (EUL) in its KRW market within 24 hours on July 25–26. EUL generated over $226 million in Day 1 volume and gained approximately 69–74% — the largest single-token Day 1 volume figure from a Upbit listing observed this cycle. MORPHO saw a 400% day-over-day volume increase, with Upbit's KRW pair accounting for 12.26% of global MORPHO daily trading volume on listing day.

Both are DeFi lending protocols. Two consecutive listings in the same DeFi sub-category is a directional signal about which categories are currently clearing Upbit's listing bar — and a concrete data point on the size of liquidity event a Upbit KRW listing can generate for mid-to-large cap DeFi protocols in the current environment.

Cross-Market

304,597 Korean retail investors underwater in SK Hynix. SKHX oracle failure on HyperLiquid triggers $80.92M in liquidations.

304,597 Korean retail investors hold SK Hynix positions at an average cost of 1,796,628 KRW, currently underwater by approximately 13.73%. SK Hynix Q2 earnings were scheduled for July 29. The crypto dimension: HyperLiquid's SKHX perpetual oracle failed on July 28, triggering $80.92 million in liquidations. The structural issue is that under HIP-3, the token deployer controls two of three mark price inputs — a deliberate architectural feature, not a temporary vulnerability.

The combination of 304,597 Korean retail investors underwater in the underlying stock and $80.92M in related crypto derivative liquidations makes SK Hynix one of the more concentrated cross-market sentiment risks heading into Q3 earnings season.

Stablecoins

USD1 reaches $5.3B. RLUSD lists on Upbit. Kakao + Toss pursuing Circle. Korea's stablecoin entry is active from multiple directions.

USD1 (World Liberty Financial) reached $5.3B in circulating supply. Reserve composition: 15% cash, 85% government money market funds, total reserves $4.734B — slightly over-collateralized. Binance announced three simultaneous USD1 use cases: margin trading collateral, AI agent integration, and cross-border payments. WLFI also filed an OCC bank application. Solana-based USD1 separately reached a $10B market cap.

In the same week, RLUSD (Ripple's stablecoin) listed on Upbit in KRW, BTC, and USDT markets — the first Ripple stablecoin on a major Korean exchange. Kakao and Toss are pursuing Circle stablecoin infrastructure for the Korean market. Korea's stablecoin landscape is becoming active from multiple directions simultaneously: domestic fintech partners, a major US stablecoin listing on the largest Korean exchange, and global stablecoin supply growth as context.

Market

KOSPI 1-month MDD -33.9%, approaching IMF/2008/COVID levels. Fear/Greed KR 28. BTC ~$65,872. Capital rotation into crypto signaled for August.

KOSPI's one-month maximum drawdown reached 33.9% — a 0.82% probability event by historical distribution, approaching levels associated with the IMF crisis, global financial crisis, and COVID-2020. Fear and greed indices as of July 28: Korea at 28, US at 38, crypto at 29 — all in fear territory. BTC on-chain data entered loss territory this week; ETF flows on July 27 showed BTC outflows of $12M and ETH inflows of $9M. BTC near $65,872, ETH near $1,937 as of July 28.

Multiple Korean market participants are signaling capital rotation from traditional financial positions into crypto ahead of August, citing US big tech Q2 earnings as the trigger. A Bloomberg report citing Citadel sources raised FOMC surprise hike speculation on July 27; market consensus remains a hold, but Korean crypto markets treated the report as a real risk worth pricing.
